In the commune of Schiltigheim, north of Strasbourg, ANMA is transforming, rehabilitating and revitalizing the former industrial site of the Schutzenberger Brewery into an attractive new living space.<\/p>\n

Not only is the project part of a community-wide redevelopment initiative, but its location and heritage are of major interest to the town. Rich in cultural heritage, the parcel is home to several listed buildings testifying to the region’s brewing heritage, of which the Brasserie – in operation from 1850 to 2008 – is the emblem.<\/p>\n

The architectural challenge lies in striking the right balance between preserving heritage and renewing uses: preserving the exceptional building, enhancing it as part of a new district life and interweaving a new mixed-use complex – food court, housing, restaurants, shops, hotels – and new spaces open to all.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>

In such a historic setting, it was obvious to our team that the identity of the existing urban fabric had to be combined with Alsatian architecture. The design of the buildings respects the scale and distinctive aesthetics of the area, such as sloping roofs and volumes of controlled height. The brewery’s historic features are also being preserved, including the chimney, brewhouse, underground galleries and the brewmaster’s house. To this end, an active collaboration has been set up with the Architecte des B\u00e2timents de France and the curator of the DRAC Grand-Est.<\/p>\n

The rehabilitation of large historic buildings into attractive programs, such as a hotel and event facilities, and the creation of new spaces open to all, will support the district’s existing activity. The site has been reopened to local residents via planted pedestrian walkways, a central and convivial Place de l’Horloge has been created, and a wide range of uses has been added: children’s play areas, a water garden, tree-lined terraces, a food court…<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>

In parallel with the urban development of the block to open up and reactivate the site, a strategy of animation and public participation is being deployed. The project aims to bring the site to life during the construction phase, working with local associations and participatory structures to occupy the site right from the start of its transformation.<\/p>\n

The project also federates the fabric of local economic players by integrating material reuse initiatives, for the paving stones in Place de l’horloge for example, and thus activates regional SSE and circular economy networks.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>
